Overcoming the Fear of a Root Canal

Your Tooth Pain is Worse than Having a Root Canal

tooth pain, root canalSome people would rather fill up on of over the counter pain medication than think about having a problem tooth fixed. While these poor souls are masking their pain, their problem is just getting worse. Taking pain pills doesn’t heal your tooth, but a root canal will.

I promise, the pain you put up with all day every day is worse than our quick easy dental procedure. Here are some things that should make it easier for you to pick up the phone and face your fears.

Anesthesia

First of all, you won’t feel a thing! We’ll numb the site with local anesthetic before we get started. Not only will this make the procedure easier, but the pain you suffer from all day everyday will disappear. You may feel your whole body relax for the first time since your tooth started hurting.

Remove damage

In order to make sure that you are able to be comfortable in the long run, it is important to get down to the “root of the problem”. Underneath your cavity crack or chip, there is either an inflamed or decaying pulp, it’s making your nerves go haywire, and it needs to be drilled out.

Relieve Pressure

The Inflammation causes pressure on your nerves, which will increase with time.

In the case of pulp decay, there may also be an abscess under the root, in the bone. If these things aren’t dealt with (removed) they will spread and the pain will worsen. When the damage is removed, the body begins to heal, the swelling goes away and the pressure (and pain) are gone.

Prevent relapse

Suffering the pain and waiting for a miracle gives inflamed pulp time to die and decay. That decay spreads to the bone, becomes an abscess, and can spread throughout the bone. Get the work done quickly and avoid the future problems from a cavity left alone too long.

Save the Tooth

If a person responds to the pain quickly and has a root canal, they will (in most cases) keep the tooth. The tooth will look normal, be reinforced internally and with a filling or crown on top, and you will retain your natural biting force and sensation that you don’t get with an implant.

Save Money

No, a root canal is not the same as getting a filling, but it is something that all dentists are trained to do, and is a routine procedure. Most root canals can be done quickly in your dentist’s office, and are affordable, if not covered by your insurance. It is much less expensive than having the tooth entirely removed and replaced with an implant, or several implants (in cases where an abscess has spread).

Well, that’s as graphic as I want to get on the subject. The goal isn’t to scare you, it’s to let you know that relief is available, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg… If you catch it in time, it won’t even cost you a tooth.
